On the 8th, I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing Your Ex's Pets perform live in Baltimore with the slim jimmies and Pinkwench. This show truly took me by surprise and blew me away. It's such an intimate experience to watch bands perform when they're just starting out, playing with every bit of passion in their bones for even the smallest of crowds.
All of the bands mentioned are from the DMV area, and all of them are notable and worth checking out.
Your Ex's Pets in particular is a 3-piece band from Harrisonburg, VA. (Yeah, I had never heard of it either). With a tenor frontman/guitarist with sick control over his falsetto, a distinguished bassist that also takes the vocal lead in a handful of songs, and a drummer with obvious, calculated skill, it didn't take me long to fall in love with their unique and catchy - but not kitschy - sound.
Fear of Water is a coming of age album that pulls you in with dreamy yet punchy melodies and beautifully vivid lyrics that bring about profound nostalgia which can be understood by anyone that's ever waded in the waters of the unknown.
